U.S. Protest Fiction

On March 30, 2021, in Dr. Ian Curtis’s “Delinquents, Rebels, and Enfants Terribles in Postwar French Culture” course at Kenyon College, I offered a mini-lecture on Richard Wright’s novel Native Son and James Baldwin’s essay “Everybody’s Protest Novel.” Wright and Baldwin, as well as numerous other Black American intellectuals, had a profound influence on post-WWII France.
